  • Pedro Menendez de Aviles Claims Florida for Spain

    Spain was jealous France was building colonies in Florida. So they sent a man by the name of Pedro Menendez de Aviles to drive out the French colonists. He was born in 1519. Pedro Menendez ran away from home to be a sailor at the age of 14. He became a officer for the Spanish navy and the king paid him to fight pirates in 1549. When Phillip ll became king in 1556, he gave Pedro Menendez de Aviles permission to start a colony in Florida to try to drive out the French. . The more clothes they had the richer they were because they had a lot of metal hats.

    Menendez was successful in signing a treaty or agreement, with the Colusa Indians to trade metal for food and other stuff his troops needed to survive. Menendez was a
    Strong Roman Catholic and one of his goals was to convert Native Americans to the Catholic faith. He requested that all ships coming from Spain priests. These priests became mission person, which led to the period of Spanish missions in Florida history. Menendez went back to Spain to collect more settlers, but died on September 17, 1569, before he could return to Florida. The inlet was Menendez and his men killed the shipwrecked soldiers was called Mantanzas. In 1569, they built a watch tower and a fort. Pedro Menendez became Florida's first Spanish Colonial Governor.
